Day 9 - 9 April 2015

We depart for Xian by the high speed train from Beijing West Railway Station on the Subway Line 9 at around noon and arrived at Xian North Railway Station at around 6pm.

At the Beijing West Railway Station departure area
The train reached a top speed of 303km/hr, which is like F1 speed

At the Xian North Railway Station we took the MRT to North Street Station (Line 2). Our Xian Tooyo Hotel is just next to the station. We booked it through Agoda at RM91 per night for three nights. Later we extend our stay for another three nights at RM120 per night.

After checking in we walked to the Muslim Quarter for our dinner. The Mulim Quarter is the hub of the Muslim community in Xian City, Shaanxi Province. Located to the north of the West Street in the city center, the quarter covers several blocks inhabitated by over 20,000 Muslims. There are about ten mosques in this area, among which the Great Mosque in the Huajue Lane is the most famous and popular

Muslim food and souvenir market is another feature of the area. The Beiyuanmen Muslim Market located just to the north of the Drum Tower is a great choice after the sightseeing in the city center. About 500 meters in length from south to north, the street can be reached through the archway under the Drum Tower.

Day 11 - 11 April 2015

This morning we took the MRT to the Xian North High Speed Station to board the free shuttle to the Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses. We claimed the free shuttle pass with our high speed train ticket from Beijing to Xian,  The entrance ticket to the museum is CNY150 per person.

The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. Work is ongoing at this site, which is around 1.5 kilometers east of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum in Lintong, Xian, Shaanxi Province. It is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to China. Upon ascending the throne at the age of 13 (in 246 BC), Qin Shi Huang, later the first Emperor of all China, had begun to work for his mausoleum. It took 11 years to finish. It is speculated that many buried treasures and sacrificial objects had accompanied the emperor in his after life.

We rented a tandem bicycle for CNY90 to go around the wall. It will take us at least two hours to walk round the wall but with the bicycle we can do it in a much shorter time

Behind us is one of the many watch towers on top of the wall

The wall is really wide that horse carriages can be used on top in the old days
This is one side of the wall. Imagine the distance from one end to the other

One of the most vertical climb
The long climb to the West Peak which we did not climb due to lack of time

Time for a refreshing rest after all the walking and climbing

This explain why the bottled water is so expensive up on the mountain. It has to be manually carried up
Similarly the rubbish is manually carried down
Cannot imagine that we actually walked down on those staircases that is mounted on the slope of the cliff.
The view was fantastic when we ascend and descend the mountain in the cable car

Stalls at the cable car station

The wooden Bell Tower, which is the largest and best-preserved of its kind in China, is 36 meters (118 feet) high. It stands on a brick base 35.5 meters (116.4 feet) long and 8.6 meters (28.2 feet) high on each side. During the Ming Dynasty, Xian was an important military town in Northwest China, a fact that is reflected in the size and historic significance.

We then walked back to visit the Drum Tower. The Drum Tower is located northwest of the Bell Tower of Xian, across the Bell and Drum Tower Square. Both of them are called the 'sister buildings' or 'morning bell and dark drum'. In ancient China, especially from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the drums were used to signal the running of time and on occasion were used as an alarm in emergency situations.
